The bright, sparkling Highland Lakes
play such a large recreational role in our lives, that
we tend to forget the real purpose of these seven lakes:
controlling the Colorado River's destructive flooding
capacities. The dams also give us electric power,
drinking and irrigation water and fun!
The lakes take seven giant steps up the
Colorado, climbing 646 feet over 150 continually scenic
miles.
Combined, the lakes offer 56,000 surface
acres of clean blue water for your recreational
pleasure; 700 miles of shoreline and 1 trillion, 780
billion gallons of water. These statistics make the
Highland Lakes the greatest concentration of fresh water
lakes in Texas. Fishing is great for black, white and
stripped bass, catfish, crappie, perch - and there have
been some whoppers!
Each of the lakes have numerous private
and public campgrounds, resorts and boat launches for
your entertainment.
The LCRA Lake "Information Line"
provides daily updates on lake levels, dam generating
hours, water temperatures, etc. In Austin call 473-3333
or out of town 1-800-776-5272.
